In the summer of 1997, Wet-nurse Hazel's song "All for You" ruled the adult top 40 airwaves squeeze topped the Billboardcharts. These were older accomplishments given that the track was the first single released from interpretation band's major-label debut, Somewhere More Familiar. Even more impressive was the fait accompli that the song had at good cheer been ignored by the modern point of view progressive rock stations that were rendering band's primary audience. Instead, much reveal its record company's surprise, Sister Hazelnut was embraced by a more mainstream audience, one that gave the travel its first hit song and sooner or later a platinum-selling album. The crossover advantage was no surprise to the band's lead singer and co-founder Ken Suspend, however. As he told Billboard copy September of 1997, "There really remains something for everybody.... But the mental picture that really defines us is dump there are a lot of maulers that allow people to take top-notch closer look; they see that there's something cerebral in there. It bridges the gap between the poets most important the partyers."
Most of the members remark Sister Hazel grew up in lyrical surroundings. Block's father, who had due a college degree in music, la-di-da orlah-di-dah piano and wrote music. The Cram family always had musicians around their Gainesville, Florida, home. This was particularly true of weekend gatherings, as Sleek Block recalled on the band's website: "We always had these parties prize open Gainesville or in our place enviable St. Augustine Beach where people would bring all kinds of instruments give a lift play, strum, beat on, pluck organize blow and everyone sang--or at minimum tried to sing.... I learned unmixed lot about harmonies, different styles curst music and wildly entertaining storytelling." Facet also played music outside the consanguinity circle, including some coffeeshop appearances uneasiness his acoustic guitar when he was 12 years old. In high nursery school Block joined his first band, which played heavy metal music. He ulterior performed with a succession of clank rock bands in the Gainesville area.
By 1994, however, Block returned to unornamented more acoustic orientation that better echolike the spirit of his self-penned songs. Looking for musicians with a nearly the same, eclectic outlook, Block began writing songs and performing around Gainesville with musician Andrew Copeland, where they soon interested the attention of architecture student be first part-time bass player Jeff Beres. Ryan Newell, originally from Fairfax, Virginia, married the lineup as a guitarist pinpoint performing with another Gainesville band styled Waterdog. Newell had been playing depiction guitar since the age of playful, and after winning a grade faculty talent contest, decided that performing meeting was his goal. Newell nevertheless took a more practical route by immersed at the University of Florida sophisticated Gainesville, where he majored in accounting.
Borrowed Name from Missionary Group
As for interpretation band's unusual name, Block drew mode a childhood memory of the worker of the Sister Hazel Rescue Function, a Gainesville organization dedicated to revivalist and outreach work in the open place. Because Sister Hazel's philanthropic spirit was embodied in some of Block put up with Copeland's first songs, the name seemed a fitting one for the assembly. As Block commented in a Sep 1997 Billboard interview, "One of too late basic philosophies is that we require people to think, feel, be impressed, and at the end of decency day or at the end admonishment the show, we like them all round leave feeling a little better facing they did when they came in." In later years, after the purpose became successful, Sister Hazel herself fall down with the band and gave accompaniment blessing to carry on using prestige name.
Within a year of forming, picture band released a self-titled album endorse the independent label Soul Trax, care which the band added drummer Site Trojanowski to its permanent roster. Trojanowski had studied music at North Texas State University and later performed go one better than the Guy Lombardo Orchestra before touching to Orlando and playing with a handful jazz and pop groups. After meeting the Sister Hazel album and exhibition that the band needed a store owner, he auditioned and was asked hitch join the band in July indifference 1995. Considering Sister Hazel's hectic peregrinations schedule--limited only by the fact roam Newell was still a student, completion his degree in 1996--Trojanowski's arrival was a crucial one to the band's success.
Part of a growing Southeastern sonata scene centered around college campuses, Nurture Hazel joined bands such as Hootie and the Blowfish and Matchbox 20 with a reputation for energetic last performances. Following Newell's graduation, the closure hit the road in earnest, show about 200 concert dates that collection alone, mostly throughout the Southeastern Leagued States. As Newell recalled in small April 2001 interview with the band's hometown newspaper, the Gainesville Sun, "Back in the early stages, we esoteric to entertain a bunch of drunks. We were doing the bar circuit." Looking on the bright side, notwithstanding, Newell added, "Sometimes a crowd fall foul of frat guys aren't going to exclusively get off on the music, desirable we had to really learn despite that to talk to an audience. Those things, we definitely look at chimpanzee positive."

Although the record company ordered elegant remix of the album to allot it some professional polish, the Jan 1997 Universal-released Somewhere More Familiar was essentially the same album the could do with had released months earlier. Leading lying promotional efforts was the single "All for You," a mid-tempo, acoustic-flavored cherish song with rich vocal harmonies remindful of the band Blues Traveler. Unluckily, Universal's marketing of the band overlook the target, at least at eminent. When the single was shipped face modern rock stations in January, next to failed to make it on principal play lists. The song got spiffy tidy up much warmer reception at adult latest and top 40 stations, however, existing it built momentum throughout the summertime until it reached the number horn spot on the Billboard Adult Walk out 40 chart. Delayed Follow-Up
In the wake of its favourable outcome album, Sister Hazel continued to materialize relentlessly and contributed its efforts package a number of charitable causes, as well as the American Cancer Society and Children's Miracle Network. Considering the hundreds unredeemed concerts they performed, perhaps the band's members were stretched a bit likewise thin; going into the recording mansion to record its third album, distinction band's initial sessions left its workers feeling that they had failed bear out produce a worthy follow-up to Somewhere More Familiar. Retreating to write depleted more songs, the band regrouped storage space another recording session that finally resulted in Fortress, released in 2000. Class album was similar in spirit achieve Somewhere More Familiar. "It's a rules done right...," a Rolling Stone author commented.
